It was all over the news last week – Sunday was International Dawn Chorus Day.
And yes, our Dawn Chorus Walk was a week ahead of schedule, but that’s when
FoKP member and birdsong expert Erica Wells was available.
So big thanks to her for organising a walk for us – and for getting us out early so we could hear the birds properly. Considering it was 6 o’clock on a Sunday morning, we had a pretty good turnout!
We heard, and in many cases also saw, seventeen species of birds. Not bad for a central London park!
And Erica was very excited to hear a Nuthatch in the park this year – first time!
Here’s her list of all the birds we were lucky to hear this year:
Wood pigeon (Columba palumbus)
Robin (Erithacus rubecula)
Mistle thrush (Turdus viscivorus)
Blackbird (Turdus merula)
Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla)
Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes)
Blue tit (Cyanistes caerulrus)
Great tit (Parus major)
Nuthatch (Sitta Europea)
Magpie (Pica pica)
Carrion crow (Corvus corone)
Starling (Sturnus vulgaris)
House sparrow (Passer domesticus)
Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs)
Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis)
Rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri)
And last but not least – Feral pigeon!
